When History Meets the Future: Salerno Recognizes the Italian Massage Contest

There's a city, in the heart of the Mediterranean, that nearly a thousand years ago changed forever the way the Western world understands the care of the body. It was in Salerno that the Scuola Medica Salernitana was born, the first institution to blend Greek-Latin medical tradition with Arab and Jewish knowledge, the first to theorize that health also depended on wellbeing, calm, and balance, not just on treating illness. And it was in Salerno that, in the 1200s, a woman, Trotula de Ruggiero, was able to study and practice medicine at a time when this was unthinkable elsewhere.

It's no coincidence, then, that this is the very city where the Italian Massage Contest chose to be born.

In February 2026, Salerno hosted the first edition of this international massage championship, bringing professionals and emerging talents from around the world to the city. And today, that choice has earned a twofold institutional recognition: the Municipality of Salerno granted its free moral patronage to the event, through a letter signed by Mayor Vincenzo Napoli last December, while the Scuola Medica Salernitana expressed its appreciation for the initiative as well.

Two recognitions, different in form, one institutional, the other more informal, but united by the same meaning: Salerno doesn't look at the Italian Massage Contest as a passing event, but as something that belongs to it, that ideally continues its own history.

Because, in the end, what is massage if not the most tangible legacy of what the Scuola Medica Salernitana was already teaching centuries ago? That the body needs to be listened to, not just treated. That touch is a language before it's a technique. That a person's wellbeing also passes through the hands of someone who knows how to care for them.

It's the very same principle that has guided the Italian Massage Contest since its first edition: less show, more listening. Not a competition built only on trophies and rankings, but a journey that values experience, values, and the human connection created between the one giving the massage and the one receiving it.

With these two recognitions, Salerno confirms its role as the natural home for the event — a city that has always known that caring for the body is also a matter of culture. And as the organization already looks ahead to the second edition, scheduled for February 6-7, 2027, there remains the hope of renewing this bond with the local community in the years to come.
